Hobart Culture Corner

Wander around the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) at your leisure and then meet in the museum courtyard to have a look behind the scenes of Australia’s oldest working theatre with a guided tour. Then enjoy learning about the collection at the Carington Smith Art Library situated on Hobart’s historic waterfront.

There will be two concurrent tours of 15 delegates.

Meeting time & place: 12:45pm, Courtyard of TMAG, 19 Davey Street (map)

Cost: $10.00

Tour duration: 2.5 hours

School & Beyond

Learn about the Law Library at the University of Tasmania, find out about the Morris Miller Library and some of the collections, such as the Royal Society Collection and the Rare Books Collection. Lastly, have a look at the Nettlefold Library at the Hutchins School before walking down to the Casino for the opening drinks reception.

Maximum number of 15 delegates.

Meeting time & place: 1.15pm*, Law Library of University of Tasmania –  Faculty of Law (map : bldg 6 ref#AL14).

Cost: No charge

Tour duration: 2.5 hours

MONA

Enjoy a cruise up the River Derwent and admire the building that is MONA. A full day of enjoying the private collection at MONA – Museum of Old and New Art as well as a private tour of the library. Lunch at one of the bars or cafes (delegates expense).

There will be two tours of 20 delegates.

Meeting time & place: Group 1 – 10:30am ; Group 2 – 2:00pm Level B3 – Library (map)

Cost: $40.00 (Ferry Service $20.00 & Museum entry for non-Tasmanian residents $20.00) at delegate expense

Tour duration: 1 hour

Getting to & from MONA: Travel to MONA on the MR-1 ferry, departing from the Brooke Street ferry terminal. Arrive 15 minutes before ferry departure time. We suggest Group 1 depart on the 9:30am ferry or bus and Group 2 on the 1:00pm bus or 1.15pm  ferry or earlier if you wish to wander through the MONA collections. Return from MONA at your own leisure, the last ferry departs MONA at 5:00pm or the MONA ROMA bus at 4:30pm. Don’t forget to leave yourself time to travel from the city to Wrest Point for the Symposium Welcome Reception starting at 6:00pm.

**NOTE: There are approximately 100 steps from the MONA ferry dock upto the musuem, if this is of concern we suggest you take the MONA ROMA bus

CBD Tour

Join us on a visit to the main campus TasTAFE Library, then we will take a short walk along the Hobart Rivulet and see the University of Tasmania Clinical Library and R.A. Rodda Museum of Pathology.  The final library in this tour is the Drysdale House Library, the library for hospitality students of TasTAFE.

Maximum number of 15 delegates.

Meeting time & place: 2:00pm* Library of TasTAFE Hobart, 73 Campbell Street  (map)

Cost: No charge

Tour duration: 2 hours

Behind the scenes at LINC

What is LINC you may be asking? LINC Tasmania is the name of the organisation which brings together the previously separate entities of the: State Library of Tasmania; Tasmanian Archives Office of Tasmania; Adult Education and Tasmanian Communities Online.

This tour incorporates the Allport Museum, TIRS (Tasmanian Information and Research services) and the Hobart LINC.

There will be two concurrent tours. 20 delegates maximum (10 each group).

Meeting time & place: 1:15pm* Foyer of LINC Hobart, 91 Murray Street (map)

Cost: No charge

Tour duration: 2.5 hours

Salamanca Tour

This tour will look at two libraries, the Parliamentary Library followed by the Andrew Inglis Clark Law Library. After finding out about these two libraries delegates are free to roam around the galleries and bookstores of Salamanca. Some interesting shops include: Hobart Bookshop; Astrolabe Booksellers and Déjà vu Books. Lunch at one of the many cafes and watch the world go by. (Lunch at your own expense)

Walking Tour of ‘Bookish’ places

Take a self-guided walking tour of interesting literary places. Just follow the route on the map.
